The photo taken by Serhii Korovayny of Baghira clinging to animal rescuer Ruslan’s leg became a symbol of the suffering inflicted on animals in the Kherson region caused by the catastrophic flooding from the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam on 6th June 2023.
Realizing the severity of Baghira’s condition, Ruslan from Animal Rescue Kharkiv handed her to Anna Kurkurina, the famous Ukrainian World Champion Powerlifter, for medical assistance. Luckily, through Anna, Baghira found her way into the caring arms of Lyudmila Melnikova, manager of My Living Dogs Shelter, Odesa. Baghira’s emergency treatment as well as months of rehabilitation were funded by Sara Turetta’s Save the Dogs and other Animals ETS. 8 months later, Baghira finally got her happy ever after when she was adopted by a family in Ukraine.

Buryat was so named by soldiers at a military checkpoint because they’d found him scavenging from the corpses of rats and Russian soldiers. The UWARF team took Buryat straight to a veterinary clinic, where he had to stay for a few days. He was on the road with the team for a while before Krystina took him back to her shelter “Under the Sun” in the Odesa region. Buryat was quickly adopted and, equally as quickly, renamed Neron.
